Every parent wants their child to succeed socially – of course! You want them to have close friendships, handle conflict with confidence and communication, and feel a sense of belonging.
So when your child struggles (maybe youβre worried theyβre too shy, too reactive, too clingy, too bossy) itβs natural to want to fix them.
But hereβs the truth: Your child doesnβt need fixing. They need understanding and skills.
Weβre All Wired Differently
From early on, children show distinct social tendencies. Some naturally jump into new situations with ease while others hang back and observe. Some crave independence and push boundaries while others tend to go along with the group.
These behaviors are rooted in personality, and every personality type has both strengths and struggles.
Understanding Beats Resisting
The key isnβt to push your child to βbe more confident,β βspeak up,β or βstop overreacting.β Itβs to pause and ask yourself:
Who are they, really?
What does this behavior tell me about their needs?
Once you understand your childβs personality – whether theyβre more feisty, flexible, or fearful – you naturally shift from trying to change them to guiding them.
- A feisty, spirited child doesnβt need to βjust calm down.β They need tools to channel their strengths into confidence and leadership.
- A flexible, easygoing child doesnβt need to βjust stand up for themselves.β They need encouragement to value and voice their own opinions.
- A fearful, hesitant child doesnβt need to βbe braver.β They need a gentle nudge and a steady presence to face fears on their terms.
Empowerment Starts with Acceptance
When your child feels seen and accepted for who they are, not who you wish they would be, they gain confidence. They begin to understand themselves, trust themselves, and grow into their social world with greater resilience.
So the next time your childβs behavior pushes your buttons, pause. Donβt ask, βHow do I fix this?β but βWhat is this behavior telling me about who they are, and how can I help them grow from here?β
Itβs the difference between saying, βWhy are you being so shy?β and saying, βYou know what? Everyone feels a little nervous at first sometimesβ¦β
And after acceptance comes the next essential step: teaching skills.
Skills arenβt taught through judgment or shame. Theyβre taught through practice, patience, and presence.
You might say:
βTake your time. When youβre ready, I bet youβll join the group. In the meantime, we can sit here and watch together.β
I know itβs hard to know exactly what to say or do when youβre faced with your childβs big emotions and confusing behaviors, especially the ones that leave you feeling overwhelmed or second-guessing yourself.
