Bringing Balance Back to Modern Parenting

Strengthen your inner-compass and raise children who are both emotionally aware and capable - without choosing between connection and cooperation.

Cover of You Are The Parent by Dr. Siggie Cohen, a parenting book about moving from overparenting to balanced, confident leadership

Parenting Today Feels Harder Than Ever

And not because you’re doing it wrong.

Parents today are more informed, emotionally aware, and intentional than ever before. Yet the daily challenges haven’t disappeared – they’ve intensified.

Outbursts. Resistance. Whining. Anxiety. Power struggles. Along with that constant question in the background: Am I doing this right?

You Are The Parent introduces a powerful shift.

Instead of swinging between too permissive and too strict, this book shows you how to step into a third path: balanced parenting. Where connection and leadership work together.

A Roadmap For The Parent Who Wants Balance

Parents today are often told they have to choose: connection or boundaries, empathy or authority, softness or structure. This book was written for parents who want both.

  • For the parent who wants to raise resilient, capable kids: You care deeply about your child’s emotional well-being, but you also want them to handle frustration, adapt to change, and grow into confident, independent humans. This book shows you how to build both emotional intelligence and resilience.
  • For the parent who wants to feel calm, confident, and in charge: You’re tired of bouncing between extremes: too permissive one moment, too reactive the next. This book helps you stop parenting from guilt and second-guessing so you can lead with confidence.
  • For the parent who wants a balanced approach that actually works: You don’t need more trends or quick fixes. You need practical tools that work in real life and help build lasting emotional and behavioral skills. This book gives you exactly that.

Common Questions

Why the title You Are the Parent?

Because I believe parents need to hear those words again.

Over the last several years, parenting has progressed in incredibly positive ways. But somewhere along the way, I think many parents also started to question themselves more.

Am I being too strict? Am I damaging our connection? Is it harmful to say no? What if I handle this wrong?

And in trying so hard to understand our children, sometimes we forget something critical: YOU are the parent. You have perspective, foresight, and life experience your child doesn’t yet have. They need your warmth and empathy, yes. And they also need your leadership.

What do you mean by β€œover-parenting”?

Over-parenting is what happens when our very understandable desire to help our children turns into doing too much for them.

We over-explain, over-accommodate, over-negotiate, over-fix, and over-reassure. It all comes from a loving place, but when we consistently do too much, our children have fewer opportunities to discover what they can do.

When we over-parent, we unintentionally under-prepare our children.

So what is balanced parenting?

I know some people bristle at the word "balance." They hear it and think, "Is there really such a thing?" I believe there is.

To me, balance is about resisting the pull toward extremes and remembering that two things that seem contradictory can actually be true at the same time.

Balanced parenting lives in the AND. Kind AND in charge. Validation AND boundaries. Listening to your child’s opinion AND making the final decision. Prioritizing connection AND expecting cooperation.

A relationship where your child feels deeply seen, heard, respected, and safe... and where they can also feel that you’ve got this.

Why this book now?

Because I have never seen parents care more about getting parenting β€œright,” yet still feel so unsure of themselves. When every interaction becomes something to analyze, optimize, or worry about, parenting starts to feel incredibly complicated.

I wanted to write something that brings us back to the bigger picture. A book that doesn’t give you another impossible standard to live up to, but instead helps you quiet some of the noise, understand what actually matters, and feel more grounded in your role.

Is this a gentle parenting book?

Yes and no. :) There is so much about the shift toward gentle and respectful parenting that I value deeply: treating children with respect, caring about their emotional world, moving away from shame and fear, and recognizing that behavior is communication. I don’t want to lose any of that.

But I do think that in some interpretations of gentle parenting, we’ve lost sight of the other side of the equation: parental leadership, authority, boundaries, expectations, and confidence.

So this book isn’t a rejection of gentle parenting. In many ways, it’s about bringing those really important ideas back into balance because your child needs both.

What is covered in the book?

This is where the practical meets the bigger picture.

Yes, we get into the everyday situations that can make parenting feel so hard: tantrums, whining, listening, cooperation, transitions, sleep, siblings, anxiety, boundaries, big feelings, power struggles, resilience, and so much more.

But this book isn’t just about what to do when your child is melting down in Target or refusing to put on their shoes. Underneath all of those everyday challenges are the bigger ideas that shape how we parent.

We talk about separating feelings from behavior: your child is allowed to feel angry, disappointed, jealous, nervous, or frustrated, while you can still guide what they do with those feelings.

We talk about why validation does not mean accommodation, and how you can deeply understand your child’s experience without changing a boundary or fixing the problem for them.

We talk about why struggle is not a crisis, and how allowing children to experience mistakes, conflict, and disappointment can actually be part of preparing them for life.

And throughout the book, we come back to the idea that less is often more: less over-explaining, less negotiating, less fixing, less pressure to say exactly the β€œright” thing.

And yes, there are lots of practical examples and language throughout. You don’t have to finish the entire book before you can start using it. You can read it cover to cover, or flip to the chapter you need when you’re right in the thick of something.

Is this book only for parents who are struggling?

Not at all. You might pick up this book because parenting currently feels really hard. But you might also feel pretty good about your parenting and simply want to be more intentional about it.

You might be looking for language for those tricky moments. You might want to understand your child better. You might want to think more deeply about the kind of parent you want to be and the skills you want to help your child build.

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from becoming more confident and intentional in your parenting.

Does the book actually tell me what to SAY?

Yes. :)

If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you know I love giving you actual language. Because it’s one thing to understand the idea of β€œvalidate the feeling and hold the boundary.” It’s another thing entirely to have your child screaming in front of you and think, "Okay… but what do I actually SAY right now?!"

So throughout the book in every chapter you’ll find plenty of practical language, examples, and real-life scenarios. But here’s what I hope happens as you read:

At first, you borrow my words. Then, little by little, you start making them your own. Because the scripts are there to help you learn the thinking behind the language. Eventually, you trust yourself enough to know what you want to say.
